Is there a treatment for hantavirus?
There is no specific antiviral drug approved for hantavirus infection. Treatment is supportive intensive care, with outcomes critically dependent on early recognition and rapid escalation: oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation for respiratory failure; ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) for the most severe HPS cases; dialysis for acute kidney injury in HFRS variants; vasopressors and fluid management for cardiovascular instability. Ribavirin has been used experimentally with mixed results for HFRS but no clear benefit in HPS. Early hospitalization is the single most important factor in survival. The MV Hondius patients are receiving care in ICUs across South Africa, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Saint Helena. WHO has shipped 2,500 diagnostic kits to support rapid identification.
